Introduction

Outlook can build up a large cache over time, causing slow loading, outdated information, or syncing problems. Clearing the cache gives Outlook a fresh start without affecting your emails, contacts, or important data.

What You'll Need

• A Windows or Mac computer

• Access to your Outlook profile folders

• Ability to close and reopen Outlook

• Optional: Admin permissions, depending on work computers

Steps

  1. Close Microsoft Outlook completely to ensure no cached files are in use.

  2. Navigate to the Outlook cache folder:
    • Windows: Press Windows + R → type %localappdata%\Microsoft\Outlook → press Enter.
    • Mac: Open Finder → Go → Go to Folder → type ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/Outlook/.

  3. Locate the "RoamCache" (Windows) or "Outlook" cache files (Mac).

  4. Delete the contents of the folder, but do NOT delete the folder itself.

  5. Restart Outlook and allow it a few minutes to rebuild necessary cache files.

Alternative Methods

• Use Outlook’s built-in Reset View option to fix display issues

• Clear Auto-Complete (nickname) cache from Outlook settings

• Repair your Outlook profile using the Control Panel

• Rebuild the search index if Outlook search is still slow

What NOT to Do

• Don’t delete your entire Outlook profile folder

• Don’t clear cache while Outlook is still running

• Don’t remove PST or OST files unless instructed by IT

• Don’t force delete files if your company restricts access

FAQs

How often should I clear my Outlook cache?

Most users only need to do this when Outlook becomes slow or shows outdated information.

Will clearing the cache fix search problems?
